The Importance of Brand Positioning

What is Brand Positioning?

Brand positioning is a strategic process in which a brand establishes a unique, valued image of their branding in the minds of their target audience enabling the brand to stand out when compared to its competitors.

Why Brand Positioning Maters:

Brand positioning helps brands in many ways. For example market differentiation which can be observed through points of differentiation (PODs). PODs help the brand standout in crowded markets against it’s competitors highlighting unique features and aspects of the brand. A well developed brand position also allows the brand to clearly communicate it’s value proposition giving consumers a clear understanding of why a particular brand should be chosen over its competitors. Stronger brand positioning also helps brands justify higher or premium price points because the consumer perceives added value and greater quality.

How Apple Mastered the Art of Brand Positioning:

Over the decades Apple has stood the test of time and become one of, if not the largest multinational technology company specializing in designing, developing, and selling consumer electronics, computer software, and online services. Although they’ve made it look easy from the outside looking in, Apple has done an incredible job and put on a masterclass in brand positioning and branding as a whole. By selling emotion, and possibility rather than technical specifications, Apple has allowed themselves to standout in such a crowded market.

Selling Outcomes, Not Specs:

Rather than Apple pushing raw data like much of their competitors such as Samsung, Microsoft, and Google, Apple brands its features (such as the iPhones AirDrop feature). This allows them to frame experiences and personal empowerment giving them an edge over the competition.

Status and Premium Pricing:

Apple products typically come with a high price tag. Their use of premium pricing is used deliberately as a tool to reinforce exclusivity, positioning their hardware as a lifestyle and luxury status symbol.

Radical Consistency:

Apple has always maintained identical design standards, minimalist visual branding, and messaging discipline globally, which has built deep consumer trust over decades. This is a major reason why Apple consumers remain loyal to the brand.

Conclusion:

In conclusion, a successfully positioned brand stands out no matter how crowded the market may be. When a brand clearly and concisely delivers it’s message in a way as to positively differentiate themselves from the competition they have a higher likelihood of becoming successful. Ultimately, a strong brand strategy is not an optional luxury, it’s a foundational necessity that bridges the gap between organizational purpose and customer perception in competitive and crowded markets.
