Consumer Engagement

The Fall of Dolce & Gobbana

In the modern luxury landscape, brand equity relies as much on social responsibility and cultural intelligence as it does on craftsmanship. Few brands illustrate the volatile intersection of high fashion and corporate ethics quite like Dolce & Gabbana. Despite publishing a formal corporate code emphasizing respect for people, integrity, and social responsibility, the Italian fashion house has repeatedly found itself at the center of global controversies. The 2018 “Chopsticks” advertising backlash in China is a prime example.

These incidents expose a recurring tension between creative expression and cultural accountability. When a storied global brand stumbles in cross-cultural communication or alienates core consumer demographics, the fallout extends far beyond temporary public relations damage, threatening long-term market trust and financial stability.

Influence on Consumer Perception

Dolce & Gabbana’s history of public controversies culminating in the 2018 “Chopsticks” campaign in China alongside prior insensitive remarks, fundamentally shifted consumer perceptions from viewing the label as a glamorous luxury icon to seeing it as arrogant, culturally insensitive, and out of touch.

What D&G Should Have Done

To avoid or successfully recover from the severe reputational and financial fallout the company faced following the release of their “Chopsticks” campaign, the brand should have pre-tested the campaign with native Chinese creative teams, cultural consultants, and even local focus groups. In doing so these groups would have immediately flagged the patronizing tone of the voiceover, outdated clichés, and underlying insensitivity to the Chinese culture that was present.
